The Woman Caught in Adultery— John 8:1–11

Week 4 Facilitator — Chuck Spalding

"I really blew it! Yet the Lord did not condemn me." This passage addresses all types of forgiveness issues.

When the woman's accusers brought her before Jesus, expecting him to pronounce judgment, he told them that "the one who was without sin should throw the first stone." One by one, condemners in the crowd left. Then Jesus told the woman, "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more" (v. 11). She had been caught; she was guilty; she did deserve stoning.

In saying, "Go and sin no more," Jesus was not speaking of sinless perfection. He was warning against a return to sinful lifestyle choices.

This story teaches us that, no matter how you sin, you should seek Jesus, ask him for forgiveness, and repent.

Questions: Are you aware of a one-time or recurring sin of yours? Have you confessed it to Jesus, asked him to forgive you, and made efforts to avoid repeating sinful acts? How and why would you share with others your request to Jesus to forgive you?
