Custom Picture Frames — Don't Be Afraid to Add Complexity

There's no limit to the type, color, size, and style of frames for your photos. In addition to the popular wooden look shown in a few of the following photos, Warren Camp presents examples of custom complex picture frames he's created for beautiful photos. Custom Complex Frames


Here's an assortment of Warren's custom complex frames. Click to enlarge them and read their captions; click again to reduce them.


Warren colored the new wood frame with an ocean-blue highlight before applying hammered-metal, inner and outer embossed edges.

Clipper ship

Starting with silhouette image a black bear, Warren custom-framed a photo he took, superimposing it on the silhouette.

Black bear visitor

After desaturating almost all of the photo's colors, Warren framed the outline image with hand-drawn blue and tan borders.

Hands raised

Rather than give this image a flat wood frame, Warren added a shadowed canvas matte, then applied numerous shadows to each element to gain attention.

Church cemetery

A pair of dark-blue frames — one an acrylic brush, the other, scratched lines — was placed on the photo border for added highlight.

Maui cove

To draw attention to the photo's subjects, Warren applied a white frame around them. He then added shadows to the photo's inner and outer frames for added dimension.

Pelican interaction

After inserting Chinese characters (representing "gold," "powerful," and "dragon"), Warren affixed striations to two edges of the dragon image, then brushed a smoky frame around the entire graphic design.

Warren enhanced a road sign image with a custom yellow-gold, film emulsion frame.

Christian sign

Warren framed this image with a multicolored nebula-pattern background before surrounding the photo with a three-tier glass frame.

Center of attraction

This custom multilayer frame is composed of two mattes and a wood-like frame, each with a number of highlights and in-depth shadows.

Moose meets moose

Warren applied a plain white border to this black-background image. Then he painted a white, acid-wash frame on the image using a variety of brush thicknesses and intensities.

Joy lily

After giving the photo a steel-blue matte, Warren replicated African Padauk, an exotic hardwood, creating this multidimensional wood-frame image.
